BUG! Cataloging ExFAT volumes can fail

Post by neo-admin »

While testing NeoFinder 9.3dev in macOS 27 betas, we discovered a bug in macOS regarding ExFAT volumes.

We had already reported seven years ago that the ExFAT driver shows ompletely bogus date values for the volume creation and modification date, as you can see here:

No, that disk was NOT formatted and last modifed in 1970, of course.

Unfortunately, even in the latest macOS 27 "Golden Gate" beta, Apple did decide NOT to fix that bug.

What is worse, depending on the exact macOS version you use, the bogus date values that Apple gives to NeoFinder are so wrong that NeoFinder may have trouble cataloging these ExFAT volumes.
We have seen that in some macOS 12.x, and also some macOS 14.x versions, also in most macOS 26.x versions, but not all of them. This does NOT happen in macOS 15.x, surprisingly.

Sigh.

We were able to work around that glaring bug in the ExFAT driver, and if you have trouble with cataloging ExFAT disks, please contact us for a special development version with that fix.
