I am running macOS 26.4.1 and NeoFinder 9.2.1. I use Photo Mechanic and Capture One. All use sidecar XMP files (currently to Leica DNG files). I have one NeoFinder catalogue per year of my digital photos. In NeoFinder in the current year's catalogue (only) I see duplicated keywords, like this:
https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/dqcce6oo ... dwbku&dl=0
If in NeoFinder I click on the down arrow beside the second keyword hierarchy there is a system bleep and the second hierarchy disappears—leaving only the first hierarchy. Howeever, if I inspect another image and move back to the first the duplicate hierarchy is still present.
I've spent some time trying to resolve the problem but have not succeeded. Photo Mechanic shows only one hierarchical keyword and Capture One (with its rather poor display of keywords) also shows only one.
Does anyone have any idea what is going on? (The bizarre thing is that all catalogues for previous years—some of which also include Leica DNG files—do not display duplicate keyword hierarchies.)

Interestingly, if I select several photos using the same hierarchical keyword the Inspector does not show the keyword as duplicated—even though it is in each individual photo.

Make sure to check out the two options at the bottom on the Controlled Vocabulary window, in particular the option to only allow keywords from that list.
If NeoFinder encounters any keywords NOT on the list, AND that option is turned on, they are removed...

Many thanks for the response. However, unfortunately, that makes no difference. I still have duplicated hierarchical keywords for the current year (i.e., that specific catalogue) only.

Re: Duplicated keyword in NeoFinder
I have managed to resolve the issue by deleting all the keywords in NeoFinder and re-keywording (also in NeoFinder). I suspect I could have done the same using Photo Mechanic—because it appears the problem lies with Capture One. That app seems to have little idea of how properly to treat hierarchical keywords which have been correctly created outside Capture One.
The full resolution of the issue involved ensuring that Capture One does not write keywords but merely loads them. The keywords are a mess in Capture One—but that is clearly the fault of Capture One rather than either NeoFinder or Photo Mechanic.
Sorry for the false alarm in the context of NeoFinder but perhaps this thread will help someone in future who also has to battle with Capture One's treatment of hierarchical keywords.
